Recap
Despite a strong end-of-season surge that saw Diamonds win seven games in a row to dominate the second half of the season, Newport picked up the last Welsh Ladies Baseball Union Premier Division title in 2019 before the COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic struck, cancelling the 2020 and 2021 seasons. Newport had indeed lost their final game of the season, but finished on 24 points from 12 wins, with Llanrumney second on 22 points from 11 wins and Diamonds third on 20 points from 10 wins. [References: 2]
From those three teams there was a large gap back to Gower A, St. Joseph’s and Canton Cross, who each finished with 12 points from 6 wins and then Railway on 8 points from four wins and Fairwater Ladies who lost all 14 matches. [References: 2]
ABOUT WELSH BASEBALL
Welsh Baseball is a version of Rounders and Baseball played primarily in South Wales, and also in Liverpool, where it is known as English Baseball. It is like a cross between Baseball, Rounders and Cricket. During the latter half of the 19th Century, the famous A.G. Spalding of Major League Baseball fame organised a Baseball Tour of England and Ireland, and in the process played a number of games against English and Welsh Rounders teams, who adopted some of the rules (such as tagging a playerout with the ball and two-handed batting). It kept the poles rather than flat bases and left the diamond in an irregular shape with all four sides unequal in length. Welsh Baseball also has a bat more like a Cricket Bat than a Baseball Bat, and it tapers towards the handle. According to sources in referenced in the articles below, Irish immigrants to Liverpool and South Wales were numerous among the Working Classes playing the game in the 20th Century. It is still played in South Wales and Liverpool but is now mostly a Children’s and Teenagers Game. [References: 3]

Report
There were two different winners of the Malvern & Western Ladies Rounders League Summer Division 1 from 2015 to 2018, with Smoothly Does It and Smart Ladies alternating as Champions. Smoothly Does it winning the League in 2015 and 2017, and Smart Ladies Champions in 2016 and 2018.
The Division had 9 teams in 2015, with Runaways relegated and replaced by the promoted Rubber Duckies and Tornadoes for 2016. After 2016 there was a reduction in the top division from 10 teams to 7, as Jaspers, Fireflies, Tornadoes, and Anchor Gold were all relegated and only Legless promoted. Legless gave Smart Ladies a run for their money in 2018 after Tornadoes were re-promoted back to division 1 in place of Olivers Army.
Besides Smart Ladies and Smoothly Does It, other teams to not be relegated from Division 1 during this period (2015 to 2018) were G&T and Marlbank Misfits. As can be seen by the team names the league is played in the same spirit as recreational coed Softball. [References: 1-4]

Gameweek Reports
Gameweeks 1-2 Report (April 2022)
After two Game Weeks Carrick Emmets from Co. Monaghan, The Heath (Co. Laois), Erne Eagles (Co. Cavan) and Cuchulainn Rounders (Co. Carlow) were the only undefeated teams having played one game each. Limekiln Rounders (Co. Dublin), Glynn Barntown (Co. Wexford) had both won one and lost one while Breaffy GAA (Co. Mayo), Adamstown Rounders (Co. Wexford) and Skryne GFC (Co. Meath) were all winless. [References: S-2]
Gameweeks 3-9 Report (May-June 2022)
It was very tight at the top of the GAA Rounders Senior Men’s All-Ireland Championship after Gameweek 9 at the end of June with Erne Eagles in first place on 23 points having won four games from five. The Heath and Cuchulainn Rounders were both on 18 points with 3 wins and one loss and Carrick Emmets were undefeated on 15 points after 3 victories from 3 games. Limekiln were seemingly out the running with 2 wins and 3 losses as were both Adamstown and Breaffy with 1 triumph and 4 defeats, although Glynn Barntown, having only lost 2 games were still in with a chance with 1 victory. Skryne had only played one game and forfeited one. [References: S-2]
Gameweeks 10-13 Report (July 2022)
A series of big games between the top clubs left Cuchulainn and Erne Eagles out in front with 33 points from 6 wins in 7 games apiece. The next four places were very close with Carrick Emmets in third on 30 points from 4 wins and 1 draw from 7 games; Limekiln on 29 points from 4 wins and 3 losses; The Heath on 26 points from 4 wins and 2 losses; and Glynn Barntown on 2 wins and 1 draw from their 6 games were on 23 points. Teams out of the running were adamstown on 2 wins from 7 games; Breaffy with a single win from 7 games and Skryne with 6 losses. [References: S-2]
Gameweek 14 Report (7 August 2022)
Skryne lost by only 4 runs to 6 to Glynn Barntown as they finished with improved form especially defensively. The narrow win left Glynn Barntown in with an outside chance of making the Semi-Finals if they won versus Adamstown in their final game and LImekiln and Carrick Emmets both lost, although Glynn Barntown would need a massive win to overhaul Carrick’s run rate in order to finish above them in the tie-breaker. [References: S-2]
Gameweek 15 Report (14 August 2022)
Cuchulainn took the 2022 GAA Rounders Senior All-Ireland Championship Men’s League title after defeating Limekiln Rounders 20-2 having played only two Innings to Breaffy’s four. The Co. Carlow team had a very slight Run Rate advantage over Co. Cavan’s Erne Eagles to take the honours after both clubs finished with seven wins and one loss in their eight games. Erne Eagles had a 28-8 victory over Co. Dublin’s Limekiln in the Final Gameweek, with four innings played by Erne. Those two clubs were joined in the All-Ireland Semi-Finals by The Heath of Co. Laois and Carrick Emmetts of Co. Monaghan after The Heath won by 20-17 in the gamde between the two clubs in Gameweek 15. In the other game Co. Wexford’s Glynn-Barntown won 33-10 versus Co. Dublin’s Adamstown but failed to overcome Carrick Emmetts better Run Rate after the two finished levels on points. [References: S-1 and S-2]
All-Ireland Semi-Finals (27 August 2022)
Carrick Emmetts booked their place in the GAA Rounders Senior All-Ireland Championship Men’s Final after a close 19-17 victory at Cuchulainn Rounders of Co. Carlow. The Co. Monaghan Club went on to meet Ulster neighbours Erne Eagles in the Final after the Co. Cavan club had an easier win over The Heath of Co. Laois, running out 32-16 victors. [References: S-1]
All-Ireland Final (18 September 2022)
In an All-Ulster 2022 GAA Rounders Senior All-Ireland Championship Men’s Final, Co. Cavan’s Erne Eagles triumphed for a record 14th time, The Eagles defeated Carrick Emmetts from neighbouring Co. Monaghan 24-6 after 6.5 Innings in the Final played at the National Sports Campus at Abbottstown, Co. Dublin. [References: S-1]

ABOUT GAA ROUNDERS
Rounders is an Irish and British version of Softball and Baseball, and thought to be the ancestor of both. It was first codified in Ireland as part of the Original GAA Charter of 1884, but not organised until 1958. It is a Bat and Ball (also known as Safe Haven) sport whereby the batter attempts to hit a ball thrown at him or her by a pitcher or bowler and then attempts to run around the bases back home.

About GAA Rounders Senior Ladies Championship 2022
The 2022 GAA Rounders Senior Ladies Championship features Ulster teams Erne Eagles (Cavan), Connacht teams Breaffy (Mayo), Michael Glaveys (Roscommon) and Athenry (Galway) and Leinster teams Limekiln (Dublin), Glynn Barntown and Adamstown (both Wexford), and Bagenalstown and Cuchulainn (both Carlow).

Recap
The 1987 Welsh Baseball Union (Men’s) season featured 62 teams across 8 Divisions, from the Premier Division to the County Division, and then from the 2st Division down to the 6th Division. There were a couple of teams who forfeited the season but otherwise it was a successful season, with Lllanrumney finishing by far the best team, picking up the Premier Division title with a maximum 28 points from 14 games. St. Peter’s won the County Division on 22 points (11-3), Bridgend Street were the 1st Division winners on 20 points, Grange Albion took the 2nd Division honours on 24 points (12-1). The lower tables were won by Rumney RFC B on 22 points (11-0) in the 3rd Division, Hendre 28 Points (14-0) in the 4th Division, Llandaff North B were 5th Division winners with 24 points (12-2) and Grange Catholics C won the 6th Division title with 24 points (12-2).
The names hark back to a bygone era in South Wales, not just teams such as Grange Catholics and St. Peter’s, which would have had a large Irish Catholic contingent on their rosters, but also teams with names referencing Major League Baseball (a different, but similar sport) such as St. Phillip’s Expos, no doubt a nod to Montreal Expos. Other references to other sports include Ninian Spurs, based in the same neighbourhood as the old Cardiff City Football Club ground Ninian Park, and also Rugby Football Club and Association Football Club (Soccer) teams such as Rumney RFC and Cowden FC. New Park Liberals, Newport Civil Service also make reference to a political and administrative climate which has no doubt shifted radically since. Then there are the Old Boys teams such as Old Illtydians and Alexandra Old Boys, past pupils of Schools in South Wales and the teams with Llan in their name, a popular Welsh-language prefix. Very few, if any, of these teams are still in existence now as the League has become a Schools League.

In 2001 they overcame Derry’s Lissan 22-9 in the All-Ireland Final, and in 2002 achieved a magnificent 18-1 victory in a Replay over Dublin’s Limekiln after a 10-10 draw in the Final. The following year they again won 14-5 on this occasion against The Heath of Laois, and achieved the four in a row in 2004 with another win over Limekiln, 17-13 in another close Final. The Rounders Association of Ireland was renamed the Rounders Council of Ireland in 2005.
About Rounders
Rounders is an Irish and British version of Softball and Baseball, and thought to be the ancestor of both. It was first codified in Ireland as part of the Original GAA Charter of 1884, but not organised until 1958. It is a Bat and Ball (also known as Safe Haven) sport whereby the batter attempts to hit a ball thrown at him or her by a pitcher or bowler and then attempts to run around the bases back home.
